This species is native to the high mountains of Ecuador and Peru. It grows in arid environments where there is high sun exposure, strong air circulation, and very little rainfall. The primary source of moisture comes from fog or morning dew, and the rest of the day is typically dry. It is well-adapted to harsh conditions and can go long periods without water.
T. tectorum 'Wide Form' is stemless, slow-growing, and has a very distinctive appearance. The leaves are broader than the typical form and are covered in dense, silvery-white trichomes. These trichomes reflect sunlight and help retain moisture, giving the plant a fuzzy or velvety look. The leaves arch and curl irregularly, creating a sculptural form.
The plant blooms rarely and slowly. When it does, the bloom cycle can last several months. The inflorescence is tall and typically pale pink to lavender, standing out against the white foliage. The flowers are purple or violet and appear one at a time from yellow-green floral bracts.
